Airport is a small world where we see large number of people coming together, people of different nationalities, ethnics and culture. So it is of utmost importance that an airport provides all the facilities to make the travelers feel at comfort.
Here is a list of some of the best and worst airports in India as surveyed by some prestigious travel websites and the Airport Authority of India.
BEST AIRPORTS IN INDIA
1) Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), New
Located in the capital city of India, the Indira Gandhi International airport, New Delhi has finally found its first place in the “25-40 million passengers per annum category” ranked by the “Airport Council International“.
The travel website “The guide to sleeping in airports” has marked the same review. This ranking was based on 34 key characteristics mainly in terms of comfort, convenience, cleanliness, check-in, security and all the other facilities that make an airport feel homely.
Recently, in the “World Airport Awards 2015“, IGI Delhi has undeniably grabbed the no. 1 position in the “best airports in Asia” category. After the start of a new terminal 3, the airport has also been the largest aviation hub in South Asia.
2) Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai
Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport acquired the 5th position in the annual ACI Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards for 2014 being in the same category as Delhi. It is also known as the second busiest airport in Asia.
The airport has been winning several awards since 2013 for its “Pranaam GVK Guest Services” including the “Golden Peacock Award”.
Also in the “World’s Best Airports Award 2015”, Mumbai was awarded the third position in the “Most Improved Airports” category.
3) Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad
Being in the category of “5-15 million passengers per annum”, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport of Hyderabad has secured its third place for the year 2014.
It was also categorized as the sixth “Best Regional Airports in Asia” award in the World’s Best Airports Awards of 2015.
WORST AIRPORTS IN INDIA
1) Chennai Airport
Regarding the Chennai airport, there’s a contradiction between the survey of the Airport Authority of India and the rest.
“The guide to sleeping in airports” website has conducted an online survey of 26,297 travelers between September of 2014 and 2015. The airport was remarked as the Asia’s worst airport after the results were released on the website. The reason lay behind the poor handling of baggage and the unhygienic atmosphere. Since the last two years of 2013 and 2014, the feedback has been the same.
Despite the results of the survey, the Airport Authority of India has given 4.30 points on a scale of 5. The ranking has also ascended to 56 from the previous years’ rank of 114 and was rated 2nd in the list of AAI-managed airports.
2) Bagdogra Airport, North Bengal
Lacking the basic facilities that an airport should provide, Bagdogra airport in North Bengal did not appeal to travelers.
The airport needs to be modernized whereas it should also provide a clean and healthy atmosphere. There’s also need for renovating their regular restaurant providing all types of food facilities for the customers belonging to different regions.
3 ) Jaiprakash Narayan International Airport, Patna
The major drawback of the Jaiprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna is the insufficient space both inside and outside the terminals.
Apart from other amenities like cleanliness and comfort, the airport is considered unsuitable by AAI due to its short runways for landing of a plane.
