About the Author
Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan-American novelist born in Kabul in 1965. After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Khaled and his family sought asylum in the United States. Unable to return to his home country, he then strived to become a doctor in the US. He began writing his debut novel, “The Kite Runner” in the morning hours while he was still practicing as a physician. After the huge success of his first novel, he became a full-time writer. Presently, he also runs a non-profit organisation that works mainly for the economic and educational opportunities for Afghan women and children.
The Novel and its Plot
Khaled Hosseini published his second novel, “A Thousand Splendid Suns” in 2007 which soon became a bestselling fiction world-wide. It also made its way to the Times Bestseller list for a continuous period of 103 weeks.
The novel starts with a five-year old girl, Mariam who was harami, meaning, an illegitimate child, living in a small city Herat, in Afghanistan. Her life takes a sudden turn when she is married to Rasheed forcefully and sent to Kabul by her father soon after her mother hangs herself.
Another disaster strucks her when her husband marries an orphaned girl, Laila, as she was unable to bless him with a baby-boy. Soon the disaster turns into a blessing. She gets entangled in a beautiful mother-daughter relationship with Laila and their friendship leads them through all their hardships.
How the story advances and where the story ends is worth reading.
Outcome and Learning
Life shares our dreams with us in ways we never imagine. After losing their families, Mariam and Laila both were in a need for home in order to protect them and make them feel safe in a war-torn Afghanistan. And they found that home in each-other.
Both these characters teach us that love could bind us together and these bonds make us stronger and our lives happier in spite of the situations around us. There are these bonds for which we are ready to fight even with our lives at stake. But life is not always a fairy tale!
Like, sometimes the shifting of rocks is deep, deep below, and it’s powerful and scary down there, but all we feel on the surface is a slight tremor.
There’s much more to this book that is not written. But, it would be best if you read the book and savor every single moment yourself. Every moment, right from the beginning, is capable of touching your hearts. The story evokes a feeling that not only leaves your hearts pained, but heals you at the same time.
A Thousand Splendid Suns is an intriguing read and it will surely compel you to go for Khaled Hosseini’s other books as well.
