what happened in 2017: year in a review

2017 started with hopes to finish the black economy in India as the limit asked by PM Modi ended on the 1st of January. With the entry of new currency notes, the year also saw other economic reformations as well, the launch of “Bharat Interface for Money” (BHIM) India’s UPI App, implementation of GST and rise in online transactions.

The showbiz saw the most awaited movie, “Baahubali: The Conclusion” became a magnum opus along with other wonderful commercial as well as critically successful movies. India’s Manushi Chillar became the 6th Indian to win the beauty pageant Miss World.

In sports, Indian men & women maintained a rocking impact including that in hockey, wrestling and of course, cricket too. India hosted the FIFA U-17 Cup, the most watched U17 World Cup ever, raising hopes for the future of football in the country. On political and international relations front, India saw growing bilateral ties, emerging as a powerful economy. The relations with Pakistan remained mildly tense, the recent unprovoked firing from across the LOC, killing 3 Indian army men only worsened the relations. On business front, India’s petroleum and telecommunications giant Reliance completed 40 years.

Technology too was conquered with the ISRO sending a total of 209 satellites (including those of other countries) in the polar orbits in the indigenous PSLVs. India got a new head of the state, Honorable President Ram Nath Kovind took oath as the 14th President of India. Overall, the year was a good one for India.

Right to Privacy as a Fundamental Right

The Supreme Court’s nine judge bench on August 24 came to a verdict that the right to privacy is a fundamental right implied in the Article 21 of the constitution which assures Right to Life and Personal Liberty. The SC’s judgement further proclaimed that one’s sexual orientation and food habits are an integral part of his right to privacy which raises a question over Section 377 of IPC. The Centre welcomed the decision who argued through Attorney General KK Venugopal against Right to Privacy being a fundamental Right.

Ram Rahim Singh convicted in Rape Case
On 28 August, 2017, the Dera Sacha Sauda leader Ram Rahim Singh was sentenced to 20 years in jail  by a special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana for raping two female followers. While Ram Rahim Singh was convicted in rape case, more than 200,000 of his followers took to violence on roads in Haryana and Punjab taking lives of 30 people leaving more than 250 injured. Presently, he is serving 20 years of his sentence in Rohtak Jail.
